Specialised Services for Acne & Acne Scars
Depending on the severity of acne and type of lesions present, the following may be prescribed, often in combination for a better effect.
- Skin care products
- Prescription creams
- Prescription tablets
- Physical procedures
- Chemical Peels - Chemical peeling is a non-invasive procedure which uses a chemical solution (e.g. glycolic acid, salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid) to exfoliate the damaged and dead outer layers of the skin. It helps to remove facial blemishes, blackheads, whiteheads, soften mild acne and facial scars, reduce wrinkles, remove pre-cancerous skin growths and improve uneven skin pigmentation, leaving the skin cleaner, softer, smoother and tighter. Dr Wong will discuss with you which peel is appropriate for your condition and skin type.
- Microdermabrasion - MicroExfoliation is a technique for removing the top-most layer of skin leaving it supple and vibrant. The DiamondTome Wand removes this layer of skin by gently exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips, while at the same time vacuuming the dead skin cells away in a sterile and controlled manner. Removing this outer layer of dead skin cells helps to improve superficial skin problems such as superficial pigmentation, blackheads and “oil seeds” , leaving the skin smooth and glowing, and promoting the growth of healthy new skin cells.
- Lasers/lights - Powered by the revolutionary elōs™ Technology, the combination of electrical and laser or light energies offers a complete solution to the challenges of skin treatment with reduced overall required energy output - enabling safe, effective treatment. Highly selective light energies are absorbed by the haemoglobin and pigmented lesions, but not significantly absorbed by the normal skin. Electrical energies selectively heat blood vessels - while minimizing the effect on pigmented structure.

FAQs
Acne is the term for plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples (papules and pustules), and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Acne affects most teenagers to some extent. However, the disease is not restricted to any age group; adults in their 20s - even into their 40s - can get acne.
- Too much oil (sebum) is present in certain skin pores.
- Blocked pores from skin cells (called epithelial cells) that behave abnormally, or cosmetic products or creams which block the pores.
- Bacteria (propionibacterium acnes) love to hang out in the excess sebum that accumulates under the blocked pores. This causes redness (inflammation) and pus formation.
Acne is multifactorial, meaning many things can work together to cause acne flare-ups or bad acne. Examples are stress, hormones (particularly male hormones, stress hormones, polycystic ovary syndrome), cosmetics (moisturisers, foundations, petrolatum), certain oral medications (e.g. steroids, anticonvulusants), high humidity, family history of severe acne and diet.
In recent years, there has been renewed interest in the association between food and acne. There is some evidence that high glycemic index diets (i.e. high in refined carbohydrates/ sugar, and low in fibre) and chocolate may exacerbate acne. Many serves of dairy products per day also appears to be weakly associated with acne.
Pricing can vary depending on your specific treatment plan and will be discussed during your consultation. Speak with your doctor to find out more.
